Manuscript Development

Before the red pen comes out, we work with you on the bones of your book. Story architecture for fiction. Argument structure for non-fiction. Chapter mapping, voice calibration, and audience alignment — all handled in collaborative sessions rather than one-way reports.

"Working with the development team changed the entire trajectory of my memoir. They asked questions I hadn't thought to ask." — D. Harrington, Cork

Structural Editing

We examine the large-scale architecture of your manuscript: pacing, narrative arc, chapter transitions, logical flow, and reader engagement. This is not line-level work — it's the editorial equivalent of renovating a building before painting the walls.

Copyediting & Proofing

Precision at the sentence level. Grammar, syntax, consistency, house style, and factual cross-checks. We work in two distinct passes: copyedit first, then a clean proof after layout. No shortcuts, no automated-only passes.

We maintain style sheets per project and adhere to whichever style guide you prefer — or we'll recommend one suited to your genre and market.

Publishing Strategy

Traditional, hybrid, or independent — each route has trade-offs. We help you map the decision honestly, including cost modelling, rights considerations, distribution logistics, and realistic sales projections. No inflated promises.

RouteBest ForOur Role
TraditionalAuthors seeking advances & prestige imprintsQuery package development, agent research
HybridAuthors wanting shared investment & controlPublisher vetting, contract review
IndependentAuthors wanting full control & higher royaltiesProduction management, distributor setup

Launch Support

A book launch isn't a single event — it's a campaign. We coordinate pre-launch reader outreach, review copy distribution, metadata optimisation, and post-launch momentum tracking. We don't do your marketing for you, but we build the infrastructure so your efforts actually land.

"The launch plan they built turned my self-published poetry collection into a local bestseller. Practical, no fluff." — T. Brennan, Galway

Publishing Pipeline — How Projects Move Through Our Studio

Intake & Diagnostic

Every project begins with a manuscript diagnostic — a candid assessment of where your book stands, what it needs, and what the realistic path forward looks like. No obligation, no sugar-coating.

"The diagnostic alone was worth the enquiry. Saved me months of going in the wrong direction." — F. Ó Murchú

Active Editorial

Once scope is agreed, your manuscript enters active editorial. You'll have a dedicated editor, a shared timeline, and fortnightly check-ins. We track progress against milestones, not vague promises.

Pre-Production

Cover design coordination, interior layout, ISBN assignment, metadata preparation, and distributor onboarding. We manage the production queue so nothing falls through the cracks between editing and printing.

Quality Gate

Before any book goes to press or upload, it passes through our quality gate: a final proof review, metadata audit, and distribution test. This is non-negotiable — every project gets it.

Release & Handoff

Your book goes live. We provide a handoff package including all production files, account credentials, sales tracking setup, and a 30-day post-release support window.

Post-Release Review

Thirty days after release, we conduct a review: sales data, reader feedback patterns, and recommendations for next steps — whether that's a second edition, a sequel, or a new project entirely.

Is Your Manuscript Ready?

Not every book that arrives at our door is ready for editing. Some need more drafting time. Some need a clearer sense of audience. That's not a failure — it's a normal part of the process.

Use this quick self-assessment to gauge where you stand:

Portrait of a publishing professional reviewing manuscripts

"I approached Authentic Book Savvy after two failed attempts with other editorial services. The difference was immediate — they treated my manuscript as a project to manage, not just a document to mark up. My novel launched on schedule and within budget."

— R. Kavanagh, Author of The Quiet Border

Working Principles

These aren't slogans. They're operational commitments that shape how every project runs through our studio.

Honest Assessment Over Flattery If your manuscript needs more work before editing, we'll say so. Wasting your money helps no one.
Timelines Are Commitments We quote realistic timelines and stick to them. If something changes, you hear about it immediately.
Your Book, Your Decisions We advise. You decide. Every editorial suggestion is a recommendation, never a mandate.
No Hidden Costs Scope is agreed upfront. If the scope changes, we re-quote before proceeding. No surprises on invoices.

Common Questions

Every manuscript is different. We quote per-project after the initial diagnostic, based on word count, condition of the draft, and scope of work. As a rough guide, structural editing for a 70,000-word novel typically falls between €1,200 and €2,400. Copyediting is generally less. We're always transparent about pricing before any commitment.
Frequently. A significant portion of our projects are debut manuscripts. First-time authors often benefit most from the development track, which builds the skills and habits that make the editing process smoother and the final book stronger.
Yes. Our publishing strategy service covers all three routes — traditional, hybrid, and independent. For self-publishing, we handle production management, distributor setup (IngramSpark, KDP, etc.), metadata optimisation, and launch coordination. You retain full ownership and control.
Literary fiction, commercial fiction, memoir, narrative non-fiction, business books, poetry collections, and select academic titles. We don't currently take on children's picture books or highly technical scientific manuscripts, though we can refer you to specialists who do.
Send an enquiry through the form below or email us directly at [email protected]. Include a brief description of your project and where you are in the process. We'll respond within two working days with next steps — usually a free 20-minute diagnostic call.
